STARFOLD LORE
Field notes recovered from Flip Engine archives.
THE SPACE BETWEEN POSSIBILITIES
The Starfold is the unstable structure connecting possible routes through reality. It behaves less like a normal dimension and more like a navigable web of outcomes. Flip Engines were built to map that web.
THE BOARD IS A MAP
Each board is a Starfold map. Every tile marks a possible route, while the row and column clues report its safe value and living anchors. Recovering Lumen gives the Flip Engine enough power to open the next path.
LIVING STABILIZERS
Armanetts naturally pin unstable Starfold pathways in place. The Cartographers eventually reduced them to warning symbols and machine components, which is why the player initially mistakes them for mines or traps.
ENERGY FROM OVERLAPPING REALITIES
×2, ×3, and rare ×4 tiles contain Lumen: energy created where multiple possible realities overlap. The Flip Engine harvests Lumen to continue its descent.
EMERGENCY GUARDIAN STATE
When an anchor is overwhelmed by instability, it can enter the Bonnetank Protocol: an armored form with authority over the board itself. A Bonnetank can move anchors, rearrange hidden routes, and force the lattice back into a survivable shape.
WHERE REJECTED ROUTES ACCUMULATE
Every path a Flip Engine evaluates but does not use appears to persist somewhere. Over an unknown span of time, these unrealized routes accumulated into the Rift. Something within that accumulation developed awareness—or was always waiting there.
THE SIGNAL BEYOND THE LATTICE
A distorted Oculem-like manifestation speaks from beyond the mapped Starfold. It can apparently know board information before the Flip Engine computes it. Whether it predicts choices, remembers them, or exists outside normal sequence is unresolved.
What if the Rift isn't predicting you?
Armanett occasionally recognizes Rift locations it should never have visited. The Counting Eye responds to choices before they happen. One possibility is that the Flip Engine does not generate new boards at all—it may be replaying fragments of realities that already occurred somewhere else. If so, the Eye is not predicting the player. It remembers them.
